When Karen walked back into the office, expecting to find her men working away on their various lists, the room was completely empty except for Josephine.

“Big pileup on I-29,” she informed them. “Multiple fatalities.”

Josephine opened her desk drawer, pulled out a couple of brightly wrapped protein bars, and handed them over. “Eat. I can tell by your faces that Tiegen didn’t pan out. Pity. What was his excuse for lying about being in Fink?”

Ripping off the wrapping, Karen eyed her lunch dubiously. The so-called “white chocolate” bar looked like it had been dunked in concrete to mask the unappetizing lumps underneath. “He was getting tiny curtains made for a granddaughter’s dollhouse and didn’t want the guys ragging on him.”

“Well. That’s not an excuse you hear every day.”

Marek didn’t seem to have any problem with his bar, which was dipped in “dark chocolate.” He crunched away with enthusiasm—and his teeth didn’t break. Tentatively, Karen bit down and winced. Whatever she’d hit, it was hard. After some minor surgery, she determined that it was an almond. At least she could identify the culprit.

Unlike with the missings.

After washing down the bar with some freshly brewed Sisters Blend, Karen flopped back in her chair, stared at the ceiling, and tried to think. She’d put so much on finding a clue, somewhere, somehow, to find Danielle and Zoe. But she didn’t know if she had the strength to pick up one of the lists her men had abandoned. “So what do we do now? Wait for the troops to return?”

Surprisingly, Josephine was the one who answered. “You can go execute that warrant.”

Karen frowned over at the secretary. “What warrant?”

“The one burning a hole on your desk. The Shaft and environs.”

“Oh. The cold case.” Karen rolled her eyes over to Marek. “What do you think? You up for goosing Old Man Martin?”

Marek glanced up at the clock, which ticked to 12:50. “He’s probably not even up yet. Bar won’t open for another couple hours.”

“All the better.” Either the protein bar had worked or the idea of goosing Martin had, but Karen felt energized as she rose to her feet. “We can wake him up.”

Marek got to his feet as if doing so under a great weight. “Or we can just do it. We’ve got the warrant.”

“Party pooper.”

But when they arrived at the bar, they found only Krissy Martin. This time, they got neither the one-of-the-guys powdered face nor the heavily makeupped flirty face. Instead, the woman looked... normal. A bit of makeup here and there and a slightly oversized Bud Light T-shirt over skinny jeans. Perhaps finding out she hadn’t been rejected or abandoned by her mother had given her a better footing to stand on. Like Eyre. Until the latest bombshell. Which Karen wasn’t going to think about right now. Or perhaps ever. It was done, it was over. Whoever Eyre’s father was, Karen didn’t care to know, not at this late date.

When informed Old Man Martin wasn’t in residence, Karen asked, “Where’d your dad go?”

Krissy waved a hand.
